The Sac & Fox Recreational Trail is Iowa’s oldest National Recreational Trail, established in 1975. Its 7.2 mile crushed gravel/dirt surface follows alongside the Cedar River and Indian Creek in southeast Cedar Rapids. Last Saturday I spent the morning riding the trail out and back and taking a few pictures along the way.

I started riding at the southwestern end of the trail from the Cole St. parking lot. Since I was riding alone, I decided to skip hanging the bike rack off the back of the Subaru and pack my bike in the trunk. I had to remove both wheels and the seat post, but it all fit (barely). The trail was flat for the most part and followed water for the entire length, with several bridges over Indian Creek along the northern section. The weather was absolutely perfect, mid-70’s with a cloudless sky, and much of the trail was shaded so it wasn’t hot. There were at least five access points with parking along the trail, allowing people to ride the trail in shorter sections.

There were several interesting stories from the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve following Sunday’s action-packed Canadian Grand Prix. Headlining the news was McLaren rookie Lewis Hamilton, who took his first career victory in F1 with a dominating performance that increased his lead in the championship to eight points over teammate Fernando Alonso. Hamilton led from pole and didn’t skip a beat when the race was interrupted four times by the safety car to allow accidents to be cleaned up. Alonso, however, was borderline out of control after repeatedly going off the circuit trying to keep up with his younger teammate. Ferrari also had a bad race with Felipe Massa black-flagged for leaving the pits under a red light and Kimi Raikkonen unable to do any better than fifth place.
BMW-Sauber recorded a good result with Nick Heidfeld, who finished an impressive second place after staying out of trouble for the entire race. Robert Kubica, on the other hand, was lucky to survive a huge crash into the hairpin after touching Jarno Trulli’s Toyota and sliding off the track. The BMW car was comprehensively destroyed as it barrel-rolled across the circuit and slid to a stop on it’s side (above). Kubica miraculously sustained only a concussion and a sprained ankle, though he was airlifted to the local hospital for observation.
